The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – How a Plastic Axe United Generations Among Music Fans

It has been two decades since the legendary game hit the market in North America, giving everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like a rock star. Figuratively speaking, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who's nailed Free Bird’s four-minute guitar solo before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Developed by Harmonix, Guitar Hero provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues moving along the display in time with a song. Every sequence corresponded to particular chords, creating the feel of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games before partnering with RedOctane, later acquired by Activision during the mid-2000s. Collaboratively, they established the foundations for a surprising massively profitable series that had a remarkable influence for many musicians included, showcasing classic groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the early budgetary hurdles in securing the recordings – even though the first two games mostly used cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was nearly impossible. We couldn’t get acts such as legendary groups – RedOctane had virtually no money, and our team was pretty convinced it would fail. But once Guitar Hero became a hit, album purchases airtime were going up, all artists desired to participate.”

He adds: “Among the remarkable aspects was the number of parents reached out and thanked us for introducing their kids to the songs they adored. It evolved into a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains Younger Fans

Irish blues-rock band one featured act included their track on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist Paul Mahon recalls how the series revived classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically such music was considered music that was past it, however once it got included in the title and teenagers discovered it, abruptly it was cool. This validated it, and got rid of the ‘dad rock’ tag. It provided our catalog renewed popularity.”

At that time, the Answer’s debut album remained not available stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium for exposure for the group during their US tour supporting AC/DC. “The roadies had on Never Too Late during travel, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” Mahon says.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Rock’s heavyweight names soon took advantage of the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in dedicated spin-off titles centered around each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and legendary status. In the case of, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, it was said earned the band greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved more than half a million copies upon release, and demand for their songs rose significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

The series still motivates quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Recently, a streamer achieved an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – a notoriously difficult power-metal song popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar gameplay and extensive personalization features. This track is difficult even in the hardest setting, let alone played at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. If you play Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you should use actual weapons and go to war,” says musician the artist.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our records were moving rapidly,” he shares. “Popularity surged when we next toured, and we performed just before the headliners on the Mayhem festival.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it has threatened to overshadow all other the band has done. Recently, the song was used in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I felt differently, but now I accept it,” Li says. “If you only hear a single track, it’s totally cool – each person has a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or video games, extends beyond than selling something – it inspires a longing. Was the game able to harness this? “That’s exactly what we were trying to create,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a music icon on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

The majority installments were released over a mere half-decade from 2005 to 2010, featuring spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, corporate focus on peripherals waned, aside from a brief comeback several years later.

Games like the fan project and newer releases have kept the community alive, and there’s expectations of a new product from the founders on the way. A new studio has entered production on their first rhythm-based title. The initial creators are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“We thought those games might become similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, so I’ve always been hopeful. It's entirely possible why it can’t continue for future fans.”
